May 17, 2010 Living to Please Jesus

"I seek not to please myself, but Him who sent me."

Good Monday morning, my dear brothers and sisters. Thanks to all who sent me birthday cards in the mail, by e-mail and by e-cards. You are all wonderful. I had a great day, preached and worked for Jesus on my birthday, then went for my birthday lunch with some birthday money and had enough left over to have a birthday pizza last evening, and in fact am finishing that for breakfast right now. Ah, working for Jesus and having pizza for breakfast, can it get better then that here on earth?

Monday, and the day we pray for our veterans, for our military and for all those who work so hard to keep us safe and healthy. Please, please remember to pray for our commander in chief, first for his soul and then that he guides our United States through the power of the blood of Jesus.

Living to Please God 1: John 5:30 - "By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but Him who sent me." (NIV) (That is Jesus speaking)

One of the neatest things about living to please is that He, Jesus, will never say to you this... I want you to do as I say and not as I do. When I look back on my early years, back when the streets were still dirt, I remember my parents telling me that there are things that adults can do that we kids could not do. To name just a few, my daddy would drink a beer once in a while and of course we could not have that, and my mamma would say to Pop, Webster, you are not setting a good example for the kids. Mamma hated booze, she would not touch a drop. Pop would also enjoy a good cigar or smoking his pipe, but again mamma would say, Webster, you are not setting a good example for the kids. There were other things also, one was I could not drink coffee. I also remember telling our children please don't do as I do, do as I say. That statement is so wrong, my friends, and during this week I want to show you why...

As we live to please Jesus we do not need to worry about many things that Jesus does not want us to do when it comes to following Him. Jesus does not want us to put Him to the test with one exception, and He does not want us to judge others, or we will be judged in the same way. Even in this, that is Jesus looking out for us. This week we are going to be looking at living to please Jesus and I want to tell you right now that if we do indeed live to please Jesus, I mean really live to please Him, that should make our families very, very happy. I would like to tell you how my morning started just today, and it really felt good. I got dressed and went out for my paper, our neighbor "Art" was walking out to get his paper, and we stopped at the edge of the street and prayed together. How often on a Monday morning can you pray with a neighbor at six in the morning, and our prayers were for God to use us, and our wives to bring others to Christ.

So today in our prayers I want to pray the same way for all of you, that today as you follow Jesus that You will also tell others about Him. Will it not be better to tell others about what you learned about Jesus yesterday and how you want to share that, than about just how your day went? As we look this week at living to please Jesus we will find one thing for sure, Jesus most often taught by example. He lived the life He wants you to live, like my dear mamma who wanted me never to "drink", she set the example by the way she lived. And Jesus is still the same, so all the examples in the Bible are valid today... Amen.

Dear Father in Heaven, help us this day and every day to live to please Jesus and to share His life with others... In Jesus name, I ask this... Amen.

Go forth now and share your blessings, which by the way is just one other way to live to please Jesus... Love ya, Pastor Dan.
